Well, I had a very full weekend. Friday night, Carol, Paul and Aaron came over for some Ravenloft.
Saturday was filled with finishing the floor in our living room. It's done except for a few minor touch-ups and I love it.
Saturday evening, my older brother Rob, his wife Siouxsie, and their daughter Kyrie arrived at my parents home. They live in Oregon, but are in Texas for some kind of class that Rob's work is sending him to for the next two weeks. I had thought that they weren't going to be here until August, but was pleasantly surprised by their arrival this past weekend. Matt and I had an impromptu road trip to Austin because of it. That's where my brother and family are staying for the next two weeks. We spent most of Sunday and Monday with them there, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Sunday day was spent preparing for our trip and driving there. That evening was very laid back and relaxed, as we visited and reminisced.
Have I ever mentioned that my older brother is one of my heroes?
I love him so much.
The first part of Monday morning, we spent cruising book stores and visiting. One of the coolest things about my brother is the good taste he showed in choosing his wife. She is an awesome woman and one I have come to view truly as a sister. Which is saying a lot, since I have only one actual sister who happens to be one of my dearest friends in this world.
My niece is so precocious! She's almost eight years old, and yet can read at easily an eighth or ninth grade level. She plays a Twilek in Star Wars Galaxies, and informed me (quite proudly) that she had all the careers at Novice level. ^_~ Most of Monday's late morning she and I spent working on her "business." Imaginary of course, and she named it "Mermaid Jewelry," because we were creating all kinds of bracelets, rings and necklaces from various beads. Star-shaped, heart-shaped, butterfly-shaped, smaller beads to fit between them, purple, dark pink, light pink, rich royal blue, sky blue, yellow, white, green... Our "best customer" was Mrs President. Our store was a fairly elaborate tent constructed from the hotel suite's sheets and chairs. I was the receptionist. Hehe.
Monday afternoon, after Rob got back from his class, we went to the Texas State History Museum. Sioux stayed behind - I don't think museums interest her that much - but the rest of us thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was really fun to be able to help Kyrie understand why being Texan, even living in another state, is something to really be proud of. I know, I'm hopelessly prideful. But our heritage is so rich, and our own ancestors arrived at Galveston in 1847 to help build this state and make a home for themselves and their families here.
On Monday Matt and I picked up a book on my brother's reccomendation, and we spent the whole trip back reading it out loud, chuckling and cheering for the characters in the story. When we got home at 11pm, we continued reading it together into the small hours of the morning.
I am running on two hours of sleep and yet I am so satisfied with my weekend that I do not regret a moment of it. Nor do I regret the exhaustion lurking in my brain, waiting for me to put aside my euphoria to crawl back to realism.
I love my family.
