Illness...
Dec. 23rd, 2004 11:39 amSometimes it is difficult for me, as a healthy person, to feel truly sympathetic for the sick. I'm not talking about the chronically ill. I'm talking about the ones that call in sick or leave for the day because they don't feel well.
Generally speaking, unless I am dry heaving in the bathroom after having similarly disposed of my lunch (I can't remember the last time I felt that bad), I go to work. That may not be the healthiest approach, but I feel that if I am mobile, I can still do my job. Matt thinks I am insane and has, at various times in the past, tried to convince me to stay at home. Perhaps if I had a more physically strenuous job, I'd heed him, but I sit in front of a computer all day. I'd do the same at home if I were sick. I take care of all the standard "you must do this if you're sick" things, like drink a lot of water and ingest crazy amounts of vitamin C, but I do them at work.
/sigh
Well, that's probably part of the reason I'm salary.
I have, in the time I've worked here, only called in three times in two years that I can recall. One of those three times was for a back injury (owie!!!), the other two times were for family emergencies. All my other time off has been scheduled. I have pretty much the same record at all my past jobs.
My freshman year in high school I almost got a perfect attendance award. The only thing that prevented that was I had happened to swing by the office the day before the end of year award ceremony. The office staff congratulated me on my perfect attendance that year.
I freaked out.
I was honest enough with myself to acknowledge the fact that I was a nerd. I mean, I was in honors classes, in band, played D&D. However, I hadn't thought of myself as that bad of a nerd! It was one thing for me to privately acknowledge my nerdiness, but to have it publicly "awarded"?! Hell, no! I was "sick" the next day, and missed the award ceremony. Every year after that, I made sure to be "sick" at least once.
Where am I going with this?
It started out as a rant because a co-worker went home sick and left me here to do his job.
But now, all I can think of is how grateful I am to be healthy.
